Failing loudly, recovering deliberately, and swallowing neither.
The expensive thing about exception handling is not the syntax but the temptation — a catch block that makes the red text stop is the cheapest possible fix and the most expensive possible outcome. Ten cards, of which three are about what not to do. Designing an exception hierarchy for a library is out of scope.
